Change the Way You Change Oil – Five Essentials to Know

posted on

A lot of questions regarding oil change have the same general answer: check the owner’s manual. However, if you’re still confused about oil change, we’ll try to set the record straight.

Many people think they know everything there's to know about an oil change. These same people still feel that they change the oil way too frequently. Maybe it’s time to change the way you change your car’s oil.

1. When Is An Oil Change Required?

The timing of oil change has evolved a lot over the last few years. The best way to figure out the oil change interval is to consult the owner’s manual instead of making assumptions based on past experience or the mechanic’s advise.

Many of the modern vehicles including pickups, SUVs, and cars offer service monitors that remind you when it’s time to change the oil. These systems essentially monitor how much and how hard the car has been driven, and then send the reminders accordingly.

2. How Often Should I Check The Oil Dipstick?

Car owners should always keep an eye on the oil levels because it’s not just about the consumption but it can also be an indicator of leaks. Even if you’ve just had your oil changed, don’t forget to monitor the dipstick regularly.

Checking your oil level at least once or twice every month is recommended. Needless to say, get the repair done right away if there’s any sign of a leak. Some of the newer models feature the electronic monitors instead of the traditional dipstick, making the monitoring easier.

1. Oil Level Is Good But Oil Change Interval Is Up, What To Do?

Engine oil loses its efficiency as it ages and when that happens, the oil won’t be able to remove the excess moisture that forms inside the engine. In simpler words, using engine oil that has already lost its efficiency can reduce your engine’s life.

Although the common rule that most car owners hear is oil change after every 3000 miles or three months, it’s worth keeping in mind that that rule is now obsolete. Why? Because most of the modern automakers claim increased oil change intervals up to 7500 and even 10,000 miles.

One of the common misconceptions is that oil change only depends on the miles driven and not the time. Even if you don’t clock 7500 miles in six months, it’s still recommended to get the oil changed after every six months.

2. What’s The Right Oil For My Car?

Yet again, the best course of action is to do what the owner’s manual is telling you to do. Most of the newer models have the oil weight printed on the oil cap. Make sure you’re aware of what’s required and what’s recommended.

Your mechanic may tell you that older models need special oil but if the car’s running well, there’s no need to overspend.

3. Synthetic Oil: Do I Need It?

Synthetic oil is designed to withstand higher temperatures and resist breakdowns. In short, it’s designed to last longer. Synthetic oil is recommended for cars that tend to build up sludge. For instance, some of the Toyota and Volkswagen engines have sludge-related issues.

Synthetic oil is recommended for these engines because it fights sludge buildup, thereby extending the lifespan of the engine. Do you have a reliable mechanic who can guide you correctly when it comes to oil change? If not, get in touch with Deol Auto!
