Preventive car maintenance is an integral part of owning a car and taking good care of it. Gradually, more and more people are realizing the significance of preventive car maintenance, especially drivers who have older models.
Surprisingly enough, millennials are proving to be the most responsible as far as car maintenance is concerned. However, there are some maintenance myths that you need to avoid falling for.
Why do we still have to deal with such myths? There’s no hidden agency spreading these myths, truth be told. This false information is due to the fact that most of us take car advice from our fathers.
The automobile industry has undergone major changes and the advice that may have been relevant a couple of decades is no longer viable. So, without further ado, let’s discuss some of the most common car maintenance myths that you need to avoid.
The problem with the oil change is that some car owners don't do it regularly while some people do it way too much. The prevalent idea is that motor oil needs to be changed every 3000 miles or in three months.
According to Ford, however, you only need to change your motor oil after every 7500 miles or six months. Keep in mind though that this recommendation is for cars made in or after 2008. For older models, we’d advise you consult the manual to see the proper oil change guidelines.
Some manufacturers also claim that their models can easily go 10,000 miles without needing an oil change. If you’re still unsure about how often you should change the oil, consult your local mechanic!
One of the most common myths that people easily fall for is that their chassis needs lubrication. Funnily enough, a majority of the newer models feature chassis that doesn't require any lubrication. To avoid problems, be sure not to add grease where you don't need any.
Every car has filters that help in the smooth operation. For instance, oil filter and air filter are the most common ones. These filters do need replacement after a certain period, but not as often as you’re led to believe.
Air filters, for example, can be reused if cleaned with compressed air. If your air filters are being rendered useless very often, the problem is much deeper than just the filter. How to deal with it? It’s better to get professional help.
In older models, tune-ups constituted the replacement of spark plugs and almost all the other ignition components. However, since most of the new models are computer-controlled, tune-ups are no longer necessary.
Most of the cars these days don’t rely on the conventional ignition parts which are why tune-ups have become obsolete. However, you do need the spark plug service so don't miss out on that!
It was believed that draining your radiator should be a biannual ritual but that's not the case anymore. Why? Most of the modern cars feature closed systems which mean there's no loss of coolant.
Furthermore, antifreeze coolants are effective for two years at the very least before they stop being viable. Falling for these myths can be easy because we’ve seen the generation before us rely on them but that’s not the case anymore.
We rely on cars that are more advanced and certain maintenance tips have become obsolete. That said, never underestimate the importance of car maintenance because that’s still an integral part of how we keep our cars in good shape.
