If you’re one of the many living somewhere where the winter months mean sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and sometimes harsh weather conditions, this blog is for you!
As an auto repair shop operating out of Edmonton – Alberta, we know what a busy time winter can be for us as professionals. We’re also well aware of the kind of steps you should take when it comes to preparing that vehicle for the cold months ahead.
When it comes to getting your car ready for the winter months, here are five things you need to get done under any circumstances. Failing to do so might leave you stranded, frustrated and possibly helpless!
We’ve actually dedicated a short blog to this one! Winter tires and summer tires are both very different in design as well as by way of material. Winter tires are geared to provide added traction to allow for safe traveling over slippery and icy roads.
Make sure you buy a set of winter tires and have all four of your tires changed before winter hits. Using summer tires in the winter months is asking for trouble!
Batteries can drain pretty quickly in the winters due to loss of charge. If you start the winter with an already diminished battery, the likelihood is you will experience problems halfway in. It is best to make sure you take your car in for servicing and among other things, have your battery charged and your battery water topped up.
If your battery is too old, opt for a replacement.
You can ask your auto-technician about the different grades of oil available to you. Certain oil grades are better suited to the winter months as they tend to remain viscous and do not coagulate when it gets too cold. Again when we say winter months here, we’re talking Alberta winters!
Your radiator contains water as you already know. Though this may be a no-brainer for some, it might not be that obvious to those who have recently become car owners; you need to add anti-freeze to your car’s coolant to keep your engine protected.
Apart from preventing the coolant from freezing over as the name states, antifreeze also works to slightly increase the coolant’s boiling point which is important during winters.
Last but not least, you get wiper fluid specifically made for use during the cold winters. Find out about this and replace your regular viper fluid with the same. Again the idea here is to prevent the liquid from freezing.
Cover the bases mentioned on top, make sure your car is stocked with a complete emergency kit and you should be good to go! If you need any more guidance or assistance, just give us a shout or swing by our auto workshop!
