Winter is around the corner up in Canada and the good folk of Edmonton – Alberta know as well as anyone how bitterly cold the winters can get! Do you know what else we know about the winters? We know that winters are best survived when you’re well prepared!
You can understand that this applies not just to your homes and personal attire but also to your cars and other vehicles too!
When it comes to preparing your car for winter, as an auto work and repair shop based in Edmonton – Alberta, we know that there are a bunch of bases you need to cover. You’ve got
tire changes, engine tuning and a host of other things you can get done to keep your vehicle running sweet through the colder half of the year.
Over the course of this blog, however, we’re going to get into some useful accessories that you can and should keep in your car in the winters, just in case something needs to be addressed!
The items listed are done so assuming you already have a spare tire, toolkit, and jump cables in your car all year round. If you don’t, start with those before proceeding to the items below!
Well, technically, we’re going to mention two items in this point but we’re being sneaky and are putting them under a single heading. The items here are a snow/ice scraper and a foldable shovel.
The scraper allows you to clear the accumulated snow off your windshield and windows. The portable shovel is great if you find yourself on a patch of road where the snow has piled making it hard to cross!
Both things can be purchased from your local hardware store. You might have to visit an auto shop for the snow/ice scraper.
A small portable battery is great to have on you in the cold weather. Vehicles may lose charge while parked and this can be a real hassle as cold cars take a bit to start. Your spare battery will make sure you don’t find yourself stranded and helpless because your car’s main battery has died. Of course, the jump cables are important here!
The cold weather also tends to do a number on air pressure. This is especially so with temperatures below zero. An air compressor is a device that allows you to balance the air in your tires if and when you find them looking a little lacking or flaccid.
No, this one isn’t for stray or homeless cats you may encounter along the way (though feel free to share). Kitty litter is actually a great way to address those tires that sink into the snow. What often happens is the car sinks deeper the more you rev your engine and spin your tires.
Emptying kitty litter around the sinking tires somehow does wonders getting them unstuck!
Running out of gas on a warm sunny day could throw you off, so you can imagine the same would really be no fun during winter. Further, if you end up needing to push your way out of a snow ditch, you might burn more gas than you were banking on. This could leave you stranded if you run out before the next gas station!
A spare can of gas ensures that you have enough to make it to the nearest stop point and can also be handy for lighting fires in case you’re stranded for any other reason!
It is important to have your car prepared for the winter months in every way possible, these accessories being very much a part of that preparation. That being said, what you carry within your car is just a part of your winter prep.
The rest involves work on your car such as tuning, tire replacements et al. If you’re thinking there is some auto work you need to have done in a hurry and are located in Edmonton, don’t worry stress! Come down to our workshop and we’ll have you sorted!
